According to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service’s “Food Price Outlook,” over the past 25 years U.S. households in the lowest income quintile (the poorest 20% of households) spent 28.8%–42.6% of their annual before-tax income on food, compared with 6.5%–9.2% spent by households in the highest income quintile.
